VIETNAM – POTENTIAL CASHEW EXPORT MARKET

Cashew tree is a tropical green tree. It can grow up to 14m tall and has proven to be of great economic value due to its high productivity.

Cashew tree is native to the North-East region of Brazil, widely grown in tropical regions. India and Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Pakistan and Indonesia and Vietnam. However, when it comes to cashews, people mainly care about the nuts of this tree because cashews have the ability to prevent cancer, nourish hair and skin, care for bone health, lose weight and many other health benefits.

Cashews are used as a snack for a meal or used in many recipes just like other nuts.

Vietnam is a country located in Southeast Asia, Vietnam's soil and climate are very suitable for the development of cashew trees. According to statistics in 2018, the country's cashew nut export reached 339.7 thousand tons. The three main markets that import cashews from Vietnam are the US, China and the Netherlands. In addition, Vietnam's cashew nuts are exported to markets such as the UK, France, India, Singapore, Japan....

EXPORTING CASHEWS PROCEDURE

Cashew is not on the list of goods banned from export, so we can export this item. For raw (fresh) cashew products, we need to do a Phytosanitary certificate for each export shipment. As for the processed cashew products, there is no risk of existence or being attached by disease-causing insects, so there are cases which we do not need to do a Phytosanitary certificate

For export of fresh cashews (raw cashews):

Dossier to apply for a Phytosanitary Certificate includes:

• Business License.

• A valid establishment certificate of food safety or certification of product quality declaration or GMP or HACCP or ISO 22000 or IFS or BRC or FSSC 22000 or equivalent.

• Label.

• Registration for Phytosanitary Certificate for export (under the form specified in Appendix IV issued together with Circular 33/2014/TT-BNNPTNT).

• Commercial Contract.

Applying for a Phytosanitary Certificate process:

- Step 1: We directly submit 01 set of registration documents to the nearest Plant quarantine agency.

- Step 2: The Plant quarantine agency receives and examines the dossier according to regulations. If the application is incorrect or incomplete, the application shall be supplemented and completed.

- Step 3: After examining the dossier, the plant quarantine agency decides the quarantine location at the production establishment, the place of departure, the place of storage inland or the border gate of exportation and check the shipment immediately.

- Step 4: The plant quarantine agency issues the Phytosanitary Certificate.

In case of detecting that the consignment does not meet the phytosanitary requirements of the importing country, the plant quarantine agency shall not issue a phytosanitary certificate.

Note:

Phytosanitary Certificate (Phytosanitary Certificate) issued based on each export shipment. Therefore, it is necessary to apply for a Phytosanitary Certificate for each different shipment.

• Sales Contract

• Bill of Lading

• Phytosanitary Certificate

For unshelled cashews: HS code 08013100

For shelled cashews: HS code 08013200
